An air freighter carrying 14 men from a North African oil town crashes in the Sahara Desert during a violent sandstorm. Two passengers are killed instantly, a third is dying, and the rest struggle to survive brutal heat by day, cold at night, intense thirst and slow starvation. Communication with the outside world is cut off and when no rescue mission arrives, the choice becomes stark die or find a way to build a smaller plane from parts of the damaged vehicle. Only one man may have the know-how to create a new plane out of the wreckage of the old one. But getting this group of men to cooperate under these hellish conditions seems next to impossible, as fears, anger and rivalries surface. The London Evening Standard called it “Tense, exciting . . . horribly vivid.''
This classic novel, made into the 1965 movie starring Jimmy Stewart, Sir Richard Attenborough and Ernest Borgnine, remains one of the finest, most astute novels of human behavior under stress. In the midst of starvation, excruciating thirst and angry confrontations -- from the brilliant, steely-eyed young aircraft designer to the aging, bitter pilot -- Elleston Trevor offers insights into human conflict and what men will do to survive. One of the few novels to have two films inspired by it.
Known for his popular "Adam Hall" Quiller novels narrated by a complex, lone wolf undercover agent working for a secret department of the British government , Elleston Trevor has authored such classics as BURY HIM AMONG KINGS and remains one of the great writers of 20th century fiction.
"A master … one never doubts the absolute reality of every page he writes.”
- The New York Times
''Trevor is extremely deft with taut thrilling novels originally and unexpectedly plotted.''
- The London Times
“A master of showing the behavior of men under stress.”
- Books and Bookmen
"Few writers handle action as excitingly..."
- The Houston Chronicle

This is probably the most known work by British writer Eleeston Trevor. No wonder it was adapted twice by Hollywood. (but forget the second, lousy and despicable adaptation starring Dennis Quaid. Stick with the 1965 movie starring James Stewart.)The bunch of characters are very well defined inside the limited scope of the plot, and the narrative flows effortlessly and gripping. A very good book. The adaptation to the 1965 movie was not so difficult, since the history is not too long, and there aren't any sub plots occurring at other places at the same time, the history is pretty much linear.

The Flight Of The Phoenix edition by Elleston Trevor Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Great book adapted into 2 great movies.
Great novel! A classic! I also recommend the 1965 original movie with James Stewart, Hardy Kruger and Richard Attenborough
A hard-driving masterpiece among survival drama. Captivating and addictive. The dialogue and characterization constructed with true genius. Seemingly limitless quotable lines and a fast-paced read. This novel is a major achivement.
I loved this book finally reading it after watching the Jimmy Stewart movie years ago . As an aerospace engineer myself i find these types of books fascinating
This was a wonderful book. A true adventure of man and nature. Wonder why I love Les Stroud so much. Just one warning before reading this book make sure you have a case of water sitting behind you as you turn the dry pages. Do not attempt to read in a hot car or on the first base line of Nationals Stadium on a Sunday afternoon.
What a classic setup. Twelve men stranded in the Libyan desert after a plane crash. All the elements trying to kill them. Only limited water, with civilization 200 miles away. How will they save themselves?
I kept thinking of the line from 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' "If you're thinking of escape, the desert is three weeks in every direction." It's natural to put yourself in the characters' situation, and wonder how you'd do in their shoes; instead I just found myself promising to avoid the desert at all costs from now on. Trevor's knowledge of aviation is spot-on, and his descriptions of relentlessly encroaching thirst are cringe-worthy. A compelling, lightning-fast read.
I had just watched the Flight of the Phoenix (the good Jimmy Stewart version, not the crummy John Moore film!) and remembered I'd read the book back in high school. I like to hunt down old books, so I found this (apparently British school version) of the story of the Phoenix.
It's one of those "engineer tear-jerkers" - like Apollo 13 - where a few people make the decision to do something great in the face of disaster and it takes more brains than brawn to get it done.
The story is simple - a cargo plane is trapped in a sandstorm in the Libyan desert and crashes. The survivors at first hope to be rescued, but soon realize that nobodies looking for them. They choose different paths - some still hope for rescue and the British captain tries to walk out of the desert. One of the passengers, Springer, proposes to build an airplane from the wreckage. This outlandish idea gains support (although conflict with the idea continues through the book - especially between young Springer and the "ancient pelican" pilot - Townes. Although Springer is an "airplane designer," there's a twist to his background that almost kills the effort.
How the passengers manage to stay alive in the desert with little water and only dates to eat will keep you at the edge of your seat.
You can probably guess the ending, but I won't spoil it here in case you haven't read the book or seen the movie.
Its an oldy but goody!
