When 14-year-old Sissy discovers she's not simply the dark skinned friend of the Davis family, she's devastated. The truth destroys everything she's ever known about herself.
Raised in the house as a playmate to the Davis daughter, Sissy's been educated in books not in skills that will get her through the rough life she now knows awaits her. Still, Sissy takes a job in the kitchens, facing the persecution of other slaves and the sun-up-to-sun-down work in the hottest place on the plantation.
Savannah Davis, the 14-year-old rebel who believes in abolition and espouses Northern doctrine whenever she gets the chance, doesn't understand her sudden emotional turmoil over right and wrong.
Deliverance...Or not? Both girls are forced to decide whether they will pursue their dreams or let them die at a time when death becomes all too real. Set against the backdrop of the time directly before the Civil War, Honor and Lies is a dual coming-of-age story of family, loss and love.

Honor and Lies eBook Mary Beth Lee

I gave this book three stars because once I start any book I feel obligated to finish it. A waste of my time. This book has nothing new to offer its readers, you've read this story a million times from different authors. The same story put in a different way. Nothing interesting no drama, no excitement just flat line. My passion is reading about slavery, to get some kind of an insight of how my people lived and the struggle, heartache they went through to survive. Although this book is fiction it read just as that. I haven't read any other books by this Author Mary Beth Lee but I'm sure there are other, better ones she has written, that don't have the same similarity as others that was thinking the same thing when they wrote there book. I'm not attacking the writer, I'm attacking the story. I'm sure there are many books by Mrs. Lee that will blow you out the waters, but this is not one of them. Maybe others will get a better read from this, but it wasn't for me. DULL that's it in a nutshell.

Honor and Lies eBook Mary Beth Lee Reviews

This was an excellent, well written book. I enjoyed each character, but no more than the main 2 female characters and their differences. I will look for more books from this author!
Flat character, undeveloped plot -- I finished it only because I am one of those people who feels obligated to read on in hopes that the book will get better. It didn't. It leads up to the Civil War and then LEAPS over it to its conclusion.
A book about slavery - with a twist. I thought it was a very good book well worth reading I won't go into the depths of the story - buy it and
read it for yourself. You won't be disappointed!
When I was this book I wasn't such I would like it, but I love it. I found it refreshing to read good with the bad. It made me laugh and cry. I enjoyed it and KNOW you will also. So read it.
Very nice, but underdeveloped. I enjoyed the story very much, but felt more background on how the girls lived together as you get children would have been nice. I also felt many of the other characters cod have been much more fully developed. It read more like a short story, not a novel.
Honor and Lies This book was dragging a bit and I was tempted to give it up thinking it was going to be a 3-star rating at best. By the time I finished, however, I was thinking more in line with a 5-star rating. The last few chapters really drew me and made me glad I didn't give it up. The story was well written and definitely worthwhile.
This rings more truthful to me, than some of the other plantation life books I have read recently. But, it could be more wishful thinking than anything else, because. my great great grandmother was raised on one, and I can only hope that her life would have been better in this setting, than in one of the others. Good job, Mary Beth.
